What is a “Deep Retrofit”?
A home energy efficiency retrofit starts with a full assessment of your home’s energy usage to identify areas where you can reduce energy losses, implement more energy efficient measures and potentially switch to renewable energy sources.
After the work has been completed, your home’s BER will have improved as your home will be more energy efficient.
What Are the Benefits of a Deep Retrofit?
Homeowners that complete a deep retrofit will find their home is warmer and their energy bills reduce. Some measures also improve the aesthetics of your home.
There are also health benefits (as long as retrofit measures include adequate ventilation to avoid problems associated with indoor pollutants), such as fewer colds and flu, fewer flare ups of arthritis, and reduced susceptibility to cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.
At a national level, as the housing stock becomes more energy efficient, there are multiple benefits; reduced CO2 emissions, reduced public health expenditure, reduction of fuel poverty, creation of jobs during the retrofit period and increased consumer spending (with funds freed up as a result of lower energy bills).
How much could I save on energy bills with a home retrofit?
Research shows that the amount of savings achieved depends not only on the type and quality of retrofit work completed, but also on homeowner behaviour. After home retrofit, some residents prefer to increase the internal temperature of their home rather than maximise savings on energy bills.
Research suggests that this may account for a 30% disparity in predicted and actual savings, however, homeowners are happy with their improved living conditions.
Why do home retrofit schemes exist?
Home retrofit schemes are a way to help address the high energy consumption and CO2 emissions associated with the housing stock.
The Paris Agreement of 2015 is a global agreement to restrict the effects of global warming. Inefficient housing stock is a big contributor to energy consumption and CO2 emissions, therefore it’s one area that has been identified as having great potential for reducing global warming.
Retrofit schemes aim to educate homeowners to the benefits of upgrading their homes and at the same time help with financing.
Is there a home retrofit scheme in Ireland?
Yes. The government recently put together the National Home Retrofit Scheme, which offers government grants towards your home retrofit. In previous schemes, this has amounted to about 30% of the cost of the retrofit.
How can I get a government grant under the National Home Retrofit Scheme?
Engaging a specialist retrofit company such as ourselves simplifies the process for you. You only have to deal with one contractor (us) rather than finding multiple suppliers and workmen for multiple issues. Most small building contractors lack the specialist knowledge required in this area. We will address every possible issue that might arise in your audit.
We are the leading home energy retrofit contractor in Ireland and choice of industry professionals. Visit our about us page to find out more about our company.
What do I do next?
If you are interested in a home retrofit, you will need to find a contractor and apply through them.
Sourcing a reputable contractor is a key part of the process. It is crucial that retrofit contractors understand the aims of home retrofit in order to ensure that retrofit work is high quality, that homeowners are happy with the work completed, and that optimal energy savings are achieved.
